If so, why? And is it, and other forms of knowledge, facing unprecedented challenges to the very notion of expertise? Fortunately, we have high-powered help in tackling these questions: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.ucla.edu\/faculty\/lynn-hunt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynn Hunt<\/a>, distinguished research professor in the history faculty of UCLA. She told me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>I think there is a general issue about expertise that is going on in the entire western world \u2013 this is a broader question than why history is worth doing \u2013 which is: what is it about the democratization of education and politics that has actually, paradoxically, created this distrust of expertise?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lynn published a short, highly readable book last year called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/politybooks.com\/bookdetail\/?isbn=9781509525539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">History: Why it Matters<\/a> <\/em>(Polity Press, 2018), a spirited defence of the value of history in an age when it is particularly beset with controversy: how to teach it? What to teach? How to commemorate it? How to revise it? Who gets to decide?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lynn-Hunt-History-Why-It-Matters.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lynn-Hunt-History-Why-It-Matters.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lynn-Hunt-History-Why-It-Matters-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lynn writes, \u2018What do we learn from the past. For me, it is above all respect for those who came before us.\u2019 Her book shows that respect is not uncritical, it\u2019s interrogative, as though the past can only speak if we make the effort to tune in to its frequency.<\/p>\n<p>Lynn did her doctorate at Stanford and has spent much of her career at UCLA.
