Twilight is a \u2018mode of feeling,\u2019 he says, \u2018as well as a natural phenomenon\u2019. It\u2019s certainly a mode that greatly appealed to many 19th and 20th century painters and writers: the melancholy of dusk seemed to resonate with their feelings about their era. Think of the lonely figures haunting the gloaming in Atkinson Grimshaw\u2019s paintings. Or the golden sky in <em>The Evening Star<\/em> by Caspar David Friedrich, which manages to be both beautiful and also unsettling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/swillbrook-sunset.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/swillbrook-sunset.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/swillbrook-sunset-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/swillbrook-sunset-768x389.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>Dusk captured the imagination of a host of writers, too, Tennyson, Hardy, Housman, Walter de la Mare; and think of the pervasive gloom of Dickens\u2019 <em>Bleak House<\/em>, or recall T.S Eliot\u2019s \u2018Preludes\u2019:<\/p>\n<p>The winter evening settles down<br \/>\nWith smell of steaks in passageways.<br \/>\nSix o\u2019clock.<br \/>\nThe burnt-out ends of smoky days.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nAnd then the lighting of the lamps.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Davidson is a senior research fellow and archivist at Campion Hall in Oxford. His background is both Scottish and Anglo-Spanish and his interests are wide-ranging, embracing landscape, literature, art and architecture. As you\u2019ll hear, his most recent book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reaktionbooks.co.uk\/display.asp?ISB=9781780235103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Last of the Light: About Twilight<\/em><\/a>, in a sense grew out of his previous one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reaktionbooks.co.uk\/display.asp?K=9781861892300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Idea of North<\/em><\/a>. \u2018The twilight is the particular obsession of the north of Europe,\u2019 he writes.
