We are determined to turn a blind eye to Roman subtlety, humour and sophistication because the Romans do a very good job for us of being bridge-builders and thugs. The Greeks are sophisticated guys who go round thinking about the meaning of life, and the Romans conquer people. And those kinds of symbols of difference are terribly convenient for modern culture to use, as you can see if you look at how Rome appears in movies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an interview from the archive in which I talk to Cambridge Professor of Classics Mary Beard about her radical re-evaluation of one of ancient Rome\u2019s quintessential rituals \u2013 the triumph. There are few images more evocative of ancient Rome than the triumph. It\u2019s one of the favourite set-pieces of countless \u201csword-and-sandal\u201d epics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be awarded a triumph was the greatest accolade for a victorious Roman general. He would be drawn through the city\u2019s streets, dressed as a god and surrounded by his raucous troops, his exotic prisoners of war and his captured booty. Surely nothing could better sum up the raw aggression and triumphal militarism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/beard-roman-triumph-cover.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/beard-roman-triumph-cover.png 250w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/beard-roman-triumph-cover-197x300.png 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Hang on a moment, though, says <a title=\"Mary Beard webpage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newn.cam.ac.uk\/seniormembers\/mb127.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Beard<\/a>, in her&nbsp; book on <a title=\"The Roman Triumph\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Roman-Triumph-Mary-Beard\/dp\/0674026136\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213953834&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Roman Triumph<\/em><\/a> (<a title=\"Harvard UP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard University Press<\/a>): Are we really sure we know what was going on? And what was at stake for the general? And what the Romans themselves thought about a practice that lasted in some form or another for over a millennium? Isn\u2019t there a lot more to the triumph than we generally think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to the podcast and you will hear that Mary\u2019s answer to this last question is a resounding yes.
