Danish philosopher Kierkegaard suggested the gods created humanity out of boredom, and the poet Charles Baudelaire foresaw its French version, ennui, one day swallowing the whole earth up in an immense yawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018boredom\u2019 to describe a state we owe to Charles Dickens; in <em>Bleak House<\/em> in 1853, he referred to Lady Dedlock\u2019s \u2018chronic malady of boredom\u2019 (perhaps the clue was in her name).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The description of being \u2018bored\u2019 or finding something \u2018boring\u2019 dates back to the century before that, but open the Old Testament and you\u2019ll find something that sounds remarkably like acute boredom:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u2018When I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.\u2019 [Ecclesiastes 2:11]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But when we\u2019re bored, meaningless co-exists with a longing for meaning; it\u2019s not mere apathy, which is a lack of interest coupled with a low motivation to do anything about it. Boredom is restless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Psychologist Adam Phillips calls it <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>that state of suspended anticipation in which things are started and nothing begins, the mood of diffuse restlessness which contains that most absurd and paradoxical wish, the wish for a desire.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, we want something from our world that it cannot immediately provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s where psychology may come to the rescue: not to eliminate boredom \u2013 as you\u2019ll hear, boredom is trying to tell us something that\u2019s worth heeding \u2013 but to begin to work out what to make of its message, how to respond to it in a way that won\u2019t just send us off to watch another box set, or eat another half-litre of ice cream, or often do both at once\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/out-of-my-skull-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/out-of-my-skull-cover.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/out-of-my-skull-cover-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674984677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Out of my Skull<\/a><\/em> is a new book on the psychology of boredom by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdanckert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James Danckert<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/health.yorku.ca\/health-profiles\/index.php?mid=187596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John D. Eastwood<\/a>. James, who\u2019s my guest on this programme, is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo and a cognitive neuroscientist.
