Our guest is Doug Armato, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Minnesota Press<\/a>, a post he has held since 1998, and in the interview we talk about his career both before and after his arrival in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Minnesota Press was established 1925. On its website, it says: \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/about-us\/history-and-fact-sheet-folder\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minnesota is a midsize university press<\/a>.\u2019 If so, it would be fair to say it punches well above its weight in terms of reputation and impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its best-selling title is Terry Eagleton\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/literary-theory\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Literary Theory: An Introduction<\/a><\/em>, which has sold more than 250,000 copies since it was published in 1983. I\u2019m exactly the right generation to have been excited about that book\u2019s appearance. But the first time I was really aware of the Minnesota name on a book was in the early 1990s, when the press published musicologist Susan McClary\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/feminine-endings\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feminine Endings: Music, Gender, and Sexuality<\/a><\/em>. As the blurb for the second edition says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mcclary-feminine-endings-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mcclary-feminine-endings-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mcclary-feminine-endings-660x1024.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mcclary-feminine-endings-768x1192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mcclary-feminine-endings.jpg 808w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/feminine-endings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">When it was originally published in 1991, <em>Feminine Endings<\/em> was immediately controversial for its unprecedented intermingling of cultural criticism and musical studies, an approach that came to be called &#8220;the New Musicology.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was then at the start of my own career in publishing and I remember buying McClary\u2019s book and being excited by that bold &#8216;intermingling&#8217; and realising Minnesota was clearly a publisher to watch.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"777\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/doug-armato-x4-777x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/doug-armato-x4-777x1024.jpg 777w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/doug-armato-x4-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/doug-armato-x4-768x1013.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/doug-armato-x4.jpg 945w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><figcaption>Doug Armato x4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t summarise here the evolution of the press in the years since, as you can hear all about it in the interview with Doug.
