Yale University Press recently published <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?k=9780300226508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roger\u2019s biography of the French composer<\/a>, who was the pre-eminent figure in the group of musicians known as Les Six and remains its most-performed and best-loved member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part of 40 years ago now, it was Roger Nichols\u2019 broadcasts on Radio Three that really opened my ears to French music. Until then, I\u2019d been in the thrall of the German tradition, but he played a major part in introducing me to the scintillating textures of Ravel, the wit of Chabrier, and the bittersweet melodies of Poulenc. In time, I confess I left Poulenc behind. The religious and choral music, I hardly knew, and it too can reach depths I hadn\u2019t associated with the composer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel you have Poulenc\u2019s measure, seek out his setting of four short poems by Eluard, <em>Un Soir de neige<\/em> (A Snowy Evening) and see if it changes your mind. \u2018La nuit le froid la solitude\u2019 &#8211; cold, dark and lonely is not an atmosphere we associate with Poulenc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Poulenc sometimes <em>is<\/em> sentimental, deliberately, unashamedly, and he once declared: \u2018A vulgar tune is good if it works\u2019. But there\u2019s nearly always an irony to cut through sentiment. What he abhorred, as Roger\u2019s book shows, was <em>emphase<\/em>, a sort of self-important grandiloquence, a sort of Wagnerism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Poulenc-twitter-card-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Poulenc-twitter-card-1.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Poulenc-twitter-card-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Poulenc-twitter-card-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Poulenc-twitter-card-1-1000x563.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps what Roger\u2019s biography taught me is that in certain lights, limpid waters may appear shallow, but in fact contain depths.
