(The <em>TLS <\/em>called Chris&#8217;s book \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/articles\/guy-de-maupassant-by-christopher-lloyd-book-review-peter-cogman\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a crisp, witty, balanced and well-informed guide<\/a>.\u2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your age and background, you might have read some Maupassant at school, or maybe encountered him on a literature survey course at university. He\u2019s much anthologized. But that has proved to be a mixed blessing. The same pieces crop up again and again, representing just a tiny fraction of his 300 short stories. In France, by some estimates, he is <em>the<\/em> best-selling classic author, thanks to continuing educational sales. So his name is well known. Many people <em>feel<\/em> they know him, without really knowing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"666\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lloyd-maupassant-cover-666x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lloyd-maupassant-cover-666x1024.jpg 666w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lloyd-maupassant-cover-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lloyd-maupassant-cover-768x1181.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lloyd-maupassant-cover.jpg 966w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Christopher Lloyd\u2019s book shows, most of us have barely glimpsed the full extent of Maupassant\u2019s writing, which includes half a dozen novels as well as the short fiction, and a wide range of themes which one French edition meticulously catalogued. It included \u2018devil\u2019, \u2018divorce\u2019, \u2018double\u2019, \u2018duel\u2019, \u2018strangling\u2019, \u2018fantastic\u2019, \u2018madness\u2019, \u2018drunkenness\u2019\u2026 which maybe already gives some insight into the often dark and dangerous world Maupassant\u2019s characters inhabit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/maupassant-main-gauche-1-637x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1295\" width=\"228\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/maupassant-main-gauche-1-637x1024.jpg 637w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/maupassant-main-gauche-1-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/maupassant-main-gauche-1-768x1236.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/maupassant-main-gauche-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>His life was no less fraught. Glancing back at the notes I took when reading Chris\u2019s book, immediately under Maupassant\u2019s dates (1850-93 \u2013 note the brevity of his life), I\u2019ve written: \u2018untreatable syphilis, failed suicide, paralysis, 18-month confinement\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, on the line below that: \u2018but energy, vitality\u2019, with the word \u2018vitality\u2019 underlined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are some of the aspects of Maupassant\u2019s life and work we discussed.
