{"id":1270,"date":"2020-07-02T15:17:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T14:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/?p=1270"},"modified":"2021-10-30T12:07:46","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T11:07:46","slug":"julian-baggini-on-babettes-feast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/2020\/07\/02\/julian-baggini-on-babettes-feast\/","title":{"rendered":"Julian Baggini on Babette&#8217;s Feast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.acast.com\/5e957b9f339fe2a164bb4536\/episodes\/julian-baggini-on-babettes-feast?theme=white&amp;cover=1&amp;latest=1\" allow=\"autoplay\" width=\"100%\" height=\"110px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Babette\u2019s Feast<\/em>, released in 1987, was the first Danish submission to win the Oscar for best foreign language film and it\u2019s the subject of Julian Baggini\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/uk\/babettes-feast-9781911239673\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent book<\/a> in the BFI Film Classics series, a short, engaging essay on the film that won\u2019t take you much longer to read than the film\u2019s running time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Babette\u2019s Feast<\/em> is based on a short story by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karen_Blixen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karen Blixen<\/a>, best known as the author of <em>Out of Africa<\/em>. What could have been merely a pointed satire on the rigidity of a certain kind of religious life or a gentle culture-clash comedy, is, Julian suggests, something much deeper and much more thought-provoking: an example of film <em>as<\/em> philosophy.
