{"id":1224,"date":"2020-05-10T18:09:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-10T17:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/?p=1224"},"modified":"2020-05-10T18:56:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-10T17:56:16","slug":"danny-dorling-on-slowdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/2020\/05\/10\/danny-dorling-on-slowdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Danny Dorling on Slowdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.acast.com\/5e957b9f339fe2a164bb4536\/episodes\/danny-dorling-on-slowdown?theme=white&amp;cover=1&amp;latest=1\" allow=\"autoplay\" width=\"100%\" height=\"110px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, we have a returning guest to the podcast, Oxford professor of geography <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dannydorling.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danny Dorling<\/a>, who spoke to me recently about his new book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?k=9780300243406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slowdown<\/a><strong>. <\/strong><\/em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Danny has given his book one of those subtitles that clearly map out the terrain he intends to cover:<strong> <\/strong><em>The End of the Great Acceleration\u2014and Why It\u2019s Good for the Planet, the Economy, and Our Lives.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?k=9780300243406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dorling-slowdown-cover-676x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1233\" width=\"243\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dorling-slowdown-cover-676x1024.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dorling-slowdown-cover-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dorling-slowdown-cover-768x1163.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dorling-slowdown-cover.jpg 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You may currently be feeling at best ambivalent about the idea of slowdown, with so many of us are enduring a Covid-19-enforced pause and desperate to know when we might get back up to normal speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Danny\u2019s message is not that humanity collectively needs to slam on the brakes, but that slowdown in many aspects of modern life (though not quite all) is already happening, and we need to think about its consequences, and potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our day-to-day lives we may fail to see it, he suggests, but look at the patterns in the data and slowdown becomes visible. As he puts it in his opening pages, \u201cAn era is ending.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he\u2019s not out to paint a picture of societal collapse or some dystopian regression to barbarism. In his first chapter, he writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"color:#9c4c1c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">There are good seasons to come, but not fertile seasons in which our numbers, inventions, and aggregate wealth grow exponentially; in fact, our numbers will very soon stop growing at all.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color:#9c4c1c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The past few generations have seen great progress as well as great suffering, including the worst of all wars in terms of fatalities, genocides, and the most despicable of all human behaviors \u2014including the planning and construction required for the mass nuclear annihilation of our species.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color:#9c4c1c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">It may take us some time to accept that we now face a future of fewer discoveries, fewer new gizmos, and fewer \u201cgreat men.\u201d But is this such a bitter pill to swallow? We will also see fewer despots, less destruction, and less extreme poverty.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color:#9c4c1c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">And we will never again worship the \u201ccreative destruction\u201d that twentieth-century economists so stupidly lauded at the height of the great acceleration.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So for Dorling, slowdown is (potentially) a good thing: not only better than headlong acceleration, but our only hope of continuing to inhabit this planet. Not a guarantee of utopia, but a prospect of some sort of stable, sustainable life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/danny-dorling-april-2020-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1239\" width=\"573\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/danny-dorling-april-2020-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/danny-dorling-april-2020-1-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><figcaption>Danny Dorling, at home and podcast-ready, April 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But if slowdown sets the context, it doesn\u2019t determine the political choices that will have to be made. And so much of what we believe about our lives and our world is still about quickening change, the need to keep up or be left behind, the obligation to produce more or be found wanting. We\u2019re not imaginatively well-equipped to deal with the idea of slowdown.
