My guest on the programme is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.ox.ac.uk\/people\/professor-robert-gildea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Gildea<\/a>, who is professor of modern history at the University of Oxford. On the British situation he told me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"box red-box\"> &#8220;One of the elements that &#8216;this island story&#8217; finds difficult to cope with is the fact that Britain now is very much a multicultural society. And yet in the &#8216;island story&#8217;, that multicultural, diverse population is very much, I would say, marginalized because instinctively we are telling the story of white British or white English people who fought wars and built empires. We need to get away from the &#8216;we&#8217; as white British and think about a &#8216;we&#8217; which is much more diverse and multicultural, and try to understand that other people have a history that is not ours and other people have an experience of our history which is not the same as the white British experience of our history. They were at the other end of the Maxim gun.&#8221; <\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large wp-image-1061\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/robert-gildea--1024x569.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/robert-gildea--1024x569.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/robert-gildea--300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/robert-gildea--768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/robert-gildea--1000x555.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Robert Gildea, Oxford, June 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert\u2019s latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/empires-of-the-mind\/33C39122438741B25DA6C62B62F976F3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Empires of the Mind&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>(Cambridge University Press, 2019), looks at Britain and France\u2019s post-colonial experience and investigates how both nations have fantasized about what empire meant; how they\u2019ve attempted to come to terms with the loss of empire but nearly always failed; and how legacies of empire still cast long shadows over current politics \u2013 we talk about hostility towards immigrants in the UK dating back decades which was whipped up by the Brexit campaign. We also talk about the ways in which British and French approaches to the end of empire have differed, and how radical Islam has changed the situation again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of the UK, France, and the USA since 1945,\u2019 historian <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.port.ac.uk\/centre-for-european-and-international-studies-research\/members\/professor-david-andress.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Andress<\/a> wrote, \u2018is marked indelibly by a sense of entitlement to greatness.\u2019 The loss of empire has, Gildea argues, undermined that sense and produced attempts to conjure up new fantasies of empire to reinforce colonial divisions in contemporary societies. More bluntly put, the poisonous legacy of empire is still feeding racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I met Robert in Oxford last month, commemorations of D-Day were in full swing in Britain, so I began by asking him how he read the narrative of that which was being presented, of defiant, heroic Britain almost single-handedly defeating the Nazi foe.
