And with my guest Tim Allen, we move for the first time (at last) beyond European languages. I\u2019m always interested in stories of how translations come about, because chance so often plays a much bigger part than design. So it was with Tim, visiting Asia for the first time twenty years ago as part of his job, knowing no Vietnamese, but hearing from everyone he met about this book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/309\/309780\/the-song-of-kieu\/9780241360668.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Song of Kieu<\/em><\/a>, the national epic, part of the cultural lifeblood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1031 is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"606\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/timothyallen_head3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1031\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/timothyallen_head3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.podularity.com\/thehedgehogandthefox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/timothyallen_head3-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption>Timothy Allen<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He bought a bilingual edition of the poem from a street vendor, and that was the beginning of his fascination with the language and the text that has just culminated in his translation appearing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/penguin-classics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penguin Classics<\/a>. Along the way were his efforts to grapple with the Vietnamese language and find the right form in contemporary English for this 200-year-old text that was itself a reworking of an older Chinese version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also a literary prize for his work-in-progress, a retreat in a Scottish castle that enabled Tim to focus on his translation, and, he told me after the interview, a period when the translation looked like it would languish forever in his attic alongside the Christmas decorations until Penguin editor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/henryeliot?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Eliot<\/a> got in touch out of the blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vietnamese-American poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanvuong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ocean Vuong<\/a> has called Tim\u2019s version of <em>The Song of Kieu<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>an essential book for anyone invested, not only in Vietnamese literature, but the historic power of the national epic. Tim Allen&#8217;s new translation offers clean fluidity while honouring the original&#8217;s varied rhythms and jagged lyricism. A luminous feat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d second that. And in case your initial reaction to the label \u2018national epic\u2019 is rather like mine, \u2018well, that sounds rather worthy and dull and not something I\u2019d read for pleasure\u2019, be reassured. <em>The Song of Kieu<\/em> is nothing like that. It\u2019s fast-paced, almost cinematic in its switches of tempo and tone and focus, it\u2019s lyrical and dramatic by turn. Open it almost anywhere, and you\u2019ll be drawn in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the interview we discuss, inter al, the challenge of learning Vietnam, the background to <em>The Song of Kieu, <\/em>why Tim calls his version a &#8216;reworking&#8217; rather than a translation<em>, <\/em>and how he responded in particular to the many evocations of the natural world in the poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/625849137&amp;color=%23ff6600&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" frameborder=\"no\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, another in our series of Conversations with Translators.
